The scoreline looks like a disaster but in truth this was a superb, spirited performance by a team hit by the key unavailability through injury of Lee Pearce, their influential keeper. That in turn saw Tom Martin don the gloves and No. 1 shirt, taking him out of his accustomed centre half berth. In addition, both Jakes, Rowley and Galbraith, were absent, the former because travelling up from Bournemouth where he is at university midweek is a very tall order, and Galbraith is in the Phillipines on holiday. For all that, though, it took until the 27th minute for Ryman One South side Chipstead to take the lead, and that a little fortunately. Egham played some excellent football with their reshuffled side, Michael Carey and Paul Bartholomew in the full back slots and Neerav Patel and Wayne Noad not only capably dealing with the home threats but also triggering some fluid attacking move. The best of these before they fell behind came ten minutes in with Adam Foulser and Frankie Driver combining for the former to shoot just wide. The first Chipstead goal came from Daniel Moody sticking a leg out to a cross deep from the left, the ball coming off the inside of the post before sneaking past Martin. Carey surged forward to try to set up Foulser for a reply just before the half hour, but the Chips cleared this Sarnies' attack. The best move of the half saw Luke Muldowney slip a superb pass into Foulser's path, but Adam Peck, himself a late replacement, got a finger tip onto the shot, just enough to divert it onto his right post. Two minutes from the break Chipstead broke down the middle and Moody scored again, rounding the exposed Martin and netting comfortably.
For no obvious reason Wayne Noad had what should have been his first goal for the club ruled out five minutes into the second half, heading in from Anthony Oaks's free kick, and on 57 minutes Muldowney and top scorer Matt Graves got themselves into a mucking fuddle, so missing out on a chance to take advantage of some appallingly slack home defensive work. The third goal was from the penalty spot, after a harsh judgment on Patel's apparently fair challenge on Scott Simpson, who buried the kick past Martin. In their next attack Chipstead had more of a case for a penalty than the one converted, some hefty shoving going unpunished while defending a corner kick. Even more surprising was the referee's failure to award another kick after Noad clearly hauled Wayne Grizzle back. While the visitors must have been thankful for this leniency, it is something that hopefully will not have to called on in league games. Goal four - tiring defence, right back Nicky White runs from deep, shot rifled into the roof of the net. I cannot be the only convinced that with Lee in goal and Tom in defence the back four would not have looked as increasingly vulnerable, and I am certain that with a full strength line-up we would not have succumbed to what on paper looks like a solid tonking; we may even have nicked it.

Back to league duties on Saturday at home to Bedfont, who will be looking for a reply to Egham 's 4-1 win on 31st October.
